1900:

Founding of the Höllriegelskreuth Division

In 1900, the division in Höllriegelskreuth to the south of Munich was set up as a new experimental site for air separation. Right from the beginning, both air separation plants, and technical gases, especially oxygen for the autogenic welding process, were produced and marketed in Höllriegelskreuth.

Initially, the functions “plant construction” and “production and marketing of technical gases” were closely related to one another, as air separation units were primarily built for the company’s own plants or companies with contractual links to Linde. Not until the 1960’s was the division in Höllriegelskreuth, because of their different objectives, split into two separate work groups: “Technical Gases” and “Low-temperature and Process Engineering”.

The “Technical Gases” work group became “Linde Gas” and is to this day responsible for the production and sale of technical and medical gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen. Today, Linde gas is the leading industrial gas producer in Germany and Europe.

The original “Low-temperature and Process Engineering” division was renamed as “Process Engineering and Plant Construction” in the late sixties, and is called “Linde Engineering” today. Linde Engineering is one of few corporations world-wide that designs and constructs process engineering plants, such as air separation plants, gas processing plants and petrochemical plants. With over 4,000 plants constructed, Linde ranks today among the world’s top firms.
