Modern olefins plants are a complex network of more than 300 individual units: for thermal cracking, physical scrubbing, fractionation, adsorptive drying, catalytic hydrogenation and others. Due to this complexity of the process only a few experienced contractors worldwide can offer competitive designs for olefins plants today.
The process sequences for the recovery of olefins in gas feedstock ULTRAREC cracking plants differs from the recovery of olefins in liquid feedstock cracking plants.
Example 1
Gaseous feedstocks cracking plant for olefins production

Customer:
Petroquimica de Venezuela, S.A.
Plant location:
El Tablazo, Zulia/Venezuela
Process:
Linde process for cracking of ethane and propane as well as recovery of ethylene and propylene
Capacity:
350,000 MTA ethylene
130,000 MTA propylene
Additional products:
Hydrogenated pyrolysis gasoline
Offsites:
Storage facilities, recompression unit
Scope of work:
Basic engineering, procurement, supervision of engineering, supervision of construction and start-up; technical leadership of a German-Venezuelan consortium.
Example 2
Liquid and heavy feedstocks cracking plant for olefins production
The plant for BASF Antwerp was optimized for a high output of the products ethylene, propylene and aromatics. Feedstock for this plant are LPG and liquid feedstocks, which offer the opportunity to react to market changes and to optimize the product slate under economic consideration. The plant was executed as a turnkey project under Linde's full responsibility in 36 months.
Capacity:
600,000 MTA ethylene
400,000 MTA propylene
Additional products:
H2-fraction, hydrogenated C4-fraction, hydrogenated pyrolysis gasoline, fuel oil
Offsites:
Cooling tower, flare, tank farm
Scope of work:
General contract (turnkey, lump sum) for: Basic engineering, detail engineering, supply of equipment and materials, civil work, construction, precommissioning and start-up assistance.
Example 3
The new plant for JCIC in China is an outstanding example how the Linde-ULTRAREC technology enables the customer to react flexible to changing market prices and supply of the different feedstocks from LPG to hydrogenated tail oil.
Customer:
Jilin Chemical Industries Corporation
Plant location:
Jilin City/China
Process:
Linde PYROCRACK furnace technology for processing of naphtha, hydrogenated tail oil, raffinate oil, topping oil, AGO, LPG; Linde olefin recovery process; Linde acetylene recovery technology; Linde hydrogen pressure swing adsorption technology; IFP process for arsenic removal and two-stage gasoline hydrogenation
Capacity:
300,000 MTA ethylene
165,000 MTA propylene
4,670 MTA acetylene
Additional products:
High purity hydrogen, C4-fraction, hydrogenaged pyrolysis gasoline
Offsites:
Two high pressure steam boilers 110 t/h, tank farm, flare
Scope of work:
General lump sum contract in the consortium with Samsung Engineering Co. Ltd., Korea, for engineering and supply of equipment and materials. Linde's portion: Process and basic engineering, supply of key equipment, extensive consulting during detail engineering, supervision on site during construction, precommissioning, start-up and test run. Overall responsibility for process operability, safety and technical integrity of the plant
